On a visit to Myanmar (Burma) in 2000 Philip Yancey learned that the Burmese people have traded the notion of "copyright" for "copyleft." The Burmese jokingly say, "The only books we have are 'copies left' by visitors."
Virtually no Christian libraries currently exist in Myanmar that lend out books. Most of Myanmar's Bible college students finish their studies with only their hand-written notes (most!) or just a few paperback books.
In late 2002 a dream was acted upon - a dream to have a downtown center that would be a lending library, Christina bookstore and translation center all in one place. That dream is now reality.
The Christian Media Center is a 3000 square foot lending library in downtown Yangon that opened its doors in February, 2004. Our goal was for the CMC to be the best collection of quality Christian books for adults and children in Burmese (the common language), English, and each of the several major tribal languages.
Today the Christian Media Center has over 10,000 books. The CMC's translation center has quickly emerged as the premier catalyst for producing Christian literature in Burmese for all ages. The outreach ministry of the Children's Corner's collection of books and Christian videos daily blesses a few thousand orphans, Yangon's Sunday school teachers and neighborhood children who visit.
